School Workforce Census 2026: preparing accurate data with confidence

Written by Kellie Tillery

The School Workforce Census is an important date in the school calendar

Bringing together information that helps the Department for Education understand the school workforce. For the staff responsible for preparing the return, it can also mean an intensive period of checking records, resolving discrepancies and working to a firm deadline.

This year’s census date is Thursday 5 November 2026, with the final deadline for submitting data to the Department for Education on Friday 4 December 2026. Local authorities may set earlier deadlines, so schools should check their local arrangements well in advance.

Good preparation can make the process more manageable. Reviewing staff records early, checking that information is complete and identifying any inconsistencies before submission can help avoid last-minute corrections. It is also worth making sure that the people responsible for HR, payroll and school information systems know what needs to be checked and when.

Accurate workforce data matters beyond meeting a reporting requirement. Reliable records support informed decisions about staffing, resource planning and school operations. For multi-academy trusts, a consistent approach across schools can also make it easier to maintain oversight and spot issues before they become more difficult to resolve.

At TLG, we understand the pressures that reporting deadlines place on busy school teams. Our School ICT specialists bring practical experience of school data and systems, helping schools approach important statutory processes with greater clarity and confidence.

If your school is preparing its return, now is a useful time to review the requirements, confirm responsibilities and make sure any questions are addressed before the deadline.
